Chancellor Barb Gamey

Barb Gamey has served as Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg since July 2020. She is a co-founder of Payworks, a Manitoba based company and one of Canada’s largest national providers of Payroll, Human Resource, Time and Absence Management solutions. Payworks currently employs 330 people in Manitoba and 500 nationwide.  

Barb is dedicated to community involvement: she currently sits on the Exchange Income Corporation Board of Directors, the Manitoba First Fund Board of Directors, Winnipeg Blue Bombers Board of Directors, the Business Council of Manitoba’s Board of Directors, the UM Properties Board, and the University of Winnipeg Foundation Board. She also served as United Way Winnipeg’s 2018 Campaign Chair. Barb is an ongoing supporter of numerous other community and charitable organizations.

The Role of the Chancellor

The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University, and confers all degrees. An advisor and support to the President, the Chancellor is a public proponent of the goals and objectives of the University, and is an active participant in University activities and the University community. In particular, the Chancellor is present at Convocations to personally greet and grant degrees to graduating students.

The Chancellor is elected jointly by the Board of Regents and Senate for a three-year, renewable term, which begins on July 1. This is a voluntary, unpaid position
