Spring Convocation 2007

Graduation is a time to recognize the hard work and perseverance of our graduating students and celebrate their achievements. On Sunday, June 3, 2007, The University of Winnipeg welcomed family, friends, and the public to honour the graduating class at its eighty-third convocation as they embark on their future.

Chancellor H. Sanford Riley, President & Vice-Chancellor Lloyd Axworthy, the University Board of Regents and Senate, and the Alumni Association extend congratulations to the 1003 graduates as they join the more than 40,000 University of Winnipeg alumni around the world.

At Spring Convocation, James Eldridge, a distinguished public servant whose career spans 37 years of service, serving under six premiers received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws. Joyce Milgaard received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws for her tireless commitment in obtaining justice for her son after an over twenty-year battle with the justice system. Randall Moffat, known as the ‘quiet philanthropist’ received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws for his generosity to the city of Winnipeg and the community. Steven Schipper, artistic director of the Manitoba Theatre Centre known for bringing financial stability and artistic success to MTC received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters.  David Martin (Class of ’83) was the recipient the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Many other prominent individuals were also honoured at The University of Winnipeg Spring Convocation:

  • Reginald Skene, Senior Scholar at UWinnipeg was admitted as a Fellow of United College.
  • J.F. Reeh Taylor, Senior Counsel with Taylor McCaffrey was admitted as a Fellow in The University of Winnipeg
  • Bob Bector, Instructor in Mathematics & Statistics was awarded The Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching.
  • Craig Cooper, Associate Professor and Chair of the Classics Department was awarded The Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance.
  • Roger Kingsley, was awarded The Clarence Atchison Award for Excellence in Community Service.
  • Mary Young, Assistant Professor was awarded The Marsha Hanen Award for Excellence in Creating Community Awareness.
  • Douglas Storey (Class of 2007) gave the Valedictory Address to the graduands at the morning ceremony.
  • Susan Taylor (Class of 2007) gave the Valedictory Address to the graduands at the afternoon ceremony.
