Men's Volleyball Rocks in Rio!

Fri. Aug. 19, 2016

Canadian Men's Olympic Volleyball Team

Although their Olympic medal dreams were dashed by the Russians - Canada's Men's Volleyball Team was an outstanding success in the Rio Summer Games. They were a 'winning team' right from the start qualifying for the first time in 24 years.

The team then shocked the court by beating the highly ranked USA in straight sets in the opening match of the preliminary round.  To everyone's further surprise Canada also defeated Mexico. For the hat trick (to use a sporting metaphor) Team Canada advanced to the quarter finals with a solid 3-1 victory over Italy - the fourth ranked team in the world on Monday, August 15th.  Two days later, the Candian juggernaut was halted by the Russian team in three straight sets.

The Faculty, the Athletics Department and the entire Wesmen family could not be more proud of our representatives: Men's Volleyball head coach Larry McKay; and former Wesmen volleyball player (standing a mere 6' 8"), Justin Duff.  Larry McKay was his usually unfrazzled self - appearing calm and smiling on the side of the court despite the extreme pressure of representing an entire country on the world stage. He was also a consummate professional and gentlemen in many media interviews.  Justin Duff gave it his all and was a significant part of the team's amazing winning run in Rio. Congratulations to the entire team! We wish you even more success as you prepare for the 2020 Summer Games in Japan. Go Canada Go!
