Aabijijiwan New Media Lab

A 4,000 square-foot digital media centre and collaborative space, aabijijiwan New Media Lab houses four labs with specific production focuses – sound, projection, virtual reality (VR), and animation and video – alongside an interactive studio setup, allowing for engagement between these mediums. The space is used by researchers and graduate students, as well as to host workshops, events, and other gatherings.

The Lab provides space for integrating theory and practice into design and new media. This can enhance the areas of visual studies, new media, critical geography, Indigenous studies, and art history by integrating critical epistemologies into existing structures.

The name, aabijijiwan, means the flow or movement of the ripples of water. This space can create ripple effects that transform the City of Winnipeg and beyond. Winnipeg is located on a flood plain where two great waterways meet and is the original site of the first treaty and heartland of the Métis Nation.
