Dr. Ivor Conolley

We recently had a guest lecture from Dr. Ivor Conolley on Jamaican Archaeology. 

Ivor Conolley is an archaeologist and a consultant in cultural resources management and building preservation. He holds a PhD in History (Archaeology) and an MA in Heritage Studies from the University of the West Indies. He is an ICJS (International Centre for Jefferson Studies) fellow. He has lectured in archaeology at the UWI, led several archaeological excavations throughout Jamaica and directed the restoration of numerous historical buildings. He has been published on topics in history and archaeology. Currently president of the Jamaica Historical Society, he has served as president of the Archaeological Society of Jamaica and president of the Georgian Society of Jamaica. He is also the Executive Director of a non-profit organization, The Genesis Project.

Ivor Conolley has been very active in the field. Some of the sites he has excavated are Seville Artisan’s Workshop, Fairfield Taíno Site, Cranbrook Taíno Site, Kent Taíno Site, Maima Taino Site, Ross Craig #1 Pre-Columbian Site, Ross Craig #2 Pre-Columbian Site, Ross Craig #3 Plantation Site, Ross Craig #4 Pre-Columbian Site, Rio Nuevo Great House, Stewart Castle Great House and Slave Village, Dome Industrial Site, Mona Slave Village, Papine Slave Village, Mona Great House, Orange Valley Slave Village, Lucea Taíno Site and New River Site (Nevis).

He has also investigated about 25 Taíno sites in Trelawny and numerous cave sites including four burial caves in Jackson Bay (Portland Ridge), Patoo Hole Pictograms, Spot Valley Pictograms, Spot Valley Burial Cave, Mountain River Cave Pictograms and Petroglyphs, Water Cave Petroglyphs, Worthy Park Petroglyphs, Kempshot Petroglyphs, Two Sister’s Cave Petroglyphs, Appleton Tower Maze Cave Midden, Pen House Shelter Cave Midden, Windsor Great Cave Petroglyph, Pantrepant East Cave Petroglyph, Pantrepant West Cave Petroglyph, Long Mile Cave (Windsor) Midden, Shorty’s Cave Midden, Puskurrunkus Cave Petroglyph, Jones Hole Petroglyph, Clapham Cave Petroglyphs, Coventry Cave Petroglyphs, and Warminster Cave Petroglyphs, and Mosely Hall Petroglyphs.
