Gallery 1C03, Decolonizing Lens, and Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq are pleased to present the film screening of artist Jaimie Isaac's project, "Mino Pimatisiwin Wiisiniwin".
Jaimie Isaac is an interdisciplinary artist and curator, a member of Sagkeeng First Nation in Treaty 1 Territory, and is of mixed heritage (Anishinaabe and British descent). Her solo exhibition Brings to Light was presented at Gallery 1C03 from November 24, 2022 until February 17, 2023. In her film project, "Mino Pimatisiwin Wiisiniwin" (Living the Good Life Food), Isaac explores the sharing of knowledge and language with her grandmother Elder Mary Courchene through making food.
This event takes place at the Winnipeg Art Gallery-Qaumajuq. Doors open at 6:15 pm, followed by the film screening at 7:00 pm in Ilipvik (Learning Steps). Food and beverages will be served in Ilavut (Entry Hall), followed by panel discussion in Ilipvik (Learning Steps) at 7:45 pm.
After the panel discussion, join us for a reception in Ilavut for the launch of Jaimie Isaac's publication Brings to Light and coffee/tea station from 8:15 - 9:00 pm!
Brings to Light extends the impact of Jaimie Isaac’s exhibition. It includes intergenerational contributions by the artist's grandmother Elder Mary Courchene, mother Elaine Isaac, and son James Isaac-Fehr, beautiful illustrations of the artworks, and a series of compelling texts written by the artist, her sister Dawn Isaac, and scholar Lorena Fontaine. Here, as in the show, Isaac and her kin grapple with intergenerational Indigenous experiences of trauma, memory, resilience, and reclamation to teach us that we must never forget the harms of the past and to honour the survivors and all those who bring awareness to “the beauty of Indigenous knowledge”.
Copies of the book will be available but we are requesting a donation to the Indian Residential School Survivor's Society (recommended donation: $15.00, cash only please).
