UWinnipeg Art Rotation

Campus Art Rotation
Spring and Summer of 2024

The University of Winnipeg is pleased to hold a collection of nearly 1,200 works of art by over 250 artists. The University's art collection primarily consists of pieces created over the last century by recognized Canadian artists, with a particular focus on the work of artists residing in or connected to Treaty One Territory.

It is the University's practice to loan some of these artworks to spaces on campus for public display in departmental areas and administrative offices, provided that security and environmental conditions are favourable.

It is also the University's practice to rotate on-campus artwork loans on a regular basis. The campus art rotation has been undertaken approximately every three years, with the last major rotation having occurred in 2019. The rotation practice ensures that more members of the University community are able to enjoy the art, and that the artworks themselves get a “rest” from the environmental risks of public display.

Following is the schedule for the 2024 spring and summer rotation.

Artworks will be picked up between May 23 and June 7 and installed in Gallery 1C03 where they will be on view from June 13 - 28.

Borrowers will be able to choose artworks from the rotation pool during the display period. To assist with this important aspect of collection maintenance, rotations will be performed based on the following criteria:

  1. Artworks borrowed prior to 2020 shall be retrieved.
  2. Artworks borrowed within the past 36 months are considered new loans and shall remain in place.
  3. The Art Curator Department/Gallery 1C03 reserves the right to rotate artworks borrowed at any time, regardless of placement date.

Reclamation of previously borrowed works
The work(s) in current locations will be removed from offices/departments between May 23 – June 7. The Art Curator Department/Gallery 1C03 will endeavour to contact you in advance by e-mail to make arrangements for artwork collection. However, if you are unavailable we will gain access via Security to remove the work(s).

Choosing new works
Works on rotation will be on view in Gallery 1C03 from June 13 - 28 on weekday afternoons from 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. Interested staff and faculty are invited to visit the gallery to view available works and fill out a request form if they wish.

Processing requests
An important part of processing artwork requests is a site visit to each proposed new location to determine environmental conditions, security and traffic patterns. In order to be fully responsible stewards of this art collection, which is held in public trust, the Art Curator Department/Gallery 1C03 must ensure that environmental and security standards can be met in each location. Please note that we will also prioritize the placement of artworks in areas of high public exposure so that as many people as possible can benefit from the collection.

Installation
After the requests have been processed, the artworks will be reassigned to new spaces. Borrowers will sign an acknowledgement form that will act as a receipt for borrowed artworks and will remind borrowers of their responsibilities to the works. We hope to have this work completed by the end of August.
