Masters in Cultural Studies: Curatorial Practices

Curatorial Practices is a specialization within the established MA Program in Cultural Studies. The specialization is designed to satisfy the needs of students seeking careers in museums and galleries as curators, and to provide trained curatorial workers to meet the demand from institutions in Manitoba and across Canada. Graduates will be prepared for employment in visual arts organizations, especially interpreting, displaying and disseminating information about art.

Curatorial Practices students study historical and contemporary curatorial principles in a seminar format as well as engaging in a hands-on Practicum course. Students are placed as interns with local partnered art institutions for six-month terms in order to gain both an academic and a professional grounding in the practice of gallery and museum work. Students benefit from the University of Winnipeg's location in the downtown arts precinct and are within walking distance of the Exchange District, one of the most thriving contemporary art scenes in Canada. They have access to the curatorial staff, collections and library at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the facilities of the new Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, Gallery 1C03, and the Buhler Gallery at St. Boniface Hospital, as well as other local public, private and artist-run galleries, museums, libraries and archives.
