This course is an introduction to the study of Italian Renaissance art and architecture in the context of the social, political and economic circumstances of this time. The course traces the history of painting, sculpture and architecture of the mid-14th to the 16th century. More specific topics explore the virtuosity and philosophies of realism, the discovery of linear perspective, the artists' social and intellectual status, art patronage, and gender issues (women artists and women's art patronage).
