MLL prof publishes second monograph

Adina Balint’s new book, a monograph entitled Imaginaires et représentations littéraires de la mobilité (Peter Lang, 2020), was recently released. Dr. Glenn Moulaison, Dean of Arts, states: “I congratulate Dr. Balint on the publication of her second monograph, an exploration of the creative role the experience of mobility has in contemporary French and French-Canadian Literature. Dr. Balint’s work in this area is part of a thoughtful and well-received larger reflection on the imagination and literary creation that she has been pursuing for a number of years.”

Balint’s first monograph, Le Processus de création dans l’œuvre de J.M.G. Le Clézio, was on literary creation (Brill 2016). Balint has also co-edited two scholarly volumes: Transcultures, société et savoirs dans les Amériques (Peter Lang 2017) and Rencontre des imaginaires, imaginaires transculturels au Canada et dans les Amériques (Presses Univesitaires de Saint-Boniface, 2018). She has published several book chapters and scholarly articles on autobiography/autofiction and self-other relations.

Qu’est-ce que la littérature contemporaine d’expression française (Canada et France) peut nous apprendre de l’expérience de la mobilité comme parcours créateur orienté vers le transculturel?

Inspirée par les théories du mobility turn de John Urry et par la notion de nomadisme de Rosi Braidotti et de Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari, Adina Balint réfléchit aux rapports entre les frontières identitaires, spatiales et poétiques qui produisent de nouvelles figures d’appartenance. Cet ouvrage dont la réflexion se situe à la croisée des études littéraires, des études comparatistes et transculturelles explore des similitudes et différences entre les modes de représentation de la mobilité (géographique, des individus, des imaginaires) et la mise en tension entre le sujet littéraire, le territoire et la communauté chez Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, Simone Chaput, Sergio Kokis, Catherine Mavrikakis, Régine Robin, Maylis de Kerangal, J.M.G. Le Clézio et Andreï Makine. Il en ressort que la mobilité n’est pas une action achevée mais un processus inachevé/inachevable porteur d’une influence directe sur le devenir du personnage-narrateur/narratrice et de sa créativité (Peter Lang 2020).

Description
At the intersection of literary studies and cultural studies, Adina Balint’s Imaginaires et représentations littéraires de la mobilité draws from the theories of the mobility turn and the philosophical concepts of “deterritorialization” and “nomadism” to explore the poetics of mobility in contemporary French literature (France and Canada). Writers, such as Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, Simone Chaput, Sergio Kokis, Maylis de Kerangal, Catherine Mavrikakis and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, lead Balint to show that mobility enhances creativity and identity change, challenging the common understanding of a monolithic subject linked to a territory. If the topic of border-crossing is an apparent representation of mobility, it equally illustrates self-journeys, initiation and renewal. The texts’ narrative structure reflects such tendencies through fragmentation, polyphonic voices and the alternation of realistic and metaphorical worlds. This monograph offers new scholarship in the literary exploration of mobility, not only as a catalyst of physical and geographical movement, but as a symbolic process of continuous revival of the self in relation to the world.
