New faculty member in 2021-22: Prof. Yongshan He

The Faculty of Arts is pleased to welcome new faculty members in several departments this year including: Criminal Justice; English; History; Political Science; Psychology; Religion and Culture; Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications; Sociology; Theatre and Film; and Urban and Inner-City Studies.
We're asking each of our new faculty members to introduce themselves by providing us with a brief profile highlighting their research, a list of courses they'll teach, and a photo. That way we'll recognize them when we meet them in the halls on campus or in Zoom meetings online.

Today, we feature Prof. Yongshan He, Lecturer in the Department of Religion and Culture. Prof. He is completing her PHD at the University of Toronto, where her research focuses on Buddhist material culture; Buddhism and economy; Chinese cultural history; and the history of emotion.
Dr. Rory Dickson, Chair of the Department of Religion and Culture, states: "We are very pleased to welcome Yongshan He to the Department of Religion and Culture. As a SSHRC funded-doctoral candidate at the University of Toronto, He brings an interdisciplinary expertise with her work on Chinese Buddhism, exploring the intersection of religion, the economy, and emotion." Dr. Dickson notes that, "In addition to her innovative research program, He is an effective, dynamic teacher, making a wonderful contribution to the University of Winnipeg learning community."

Biography
Prof. Yongshan He is completing her PhD degree at the University of Toronto with a focus on Chinese Buddhism, especially Buddhist material culture. Her dissertation examines how the introduction of Buddhist statues in early medieval China generated new affective experiences, and how those experiences were translated and integrated into the Chinese repertoire of emotional concepts. Yongshan earned her BA from Zhejiang University in China and her MA in Asian Religions from McMaster University.
