Call for Nominations: Arts Excellence in Teaching Award 2024

The Faculty of Arts Faculty Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award recognizes a strong commitment to pedagogy and excellence in undergraduate teaching. The award takes into account the development of innovative, adaptive and effective teaching methods and approaches to classroom teaching, together with support for and mentoring of students. It may also recognize the development of different teaching and learning environments. There will be one award, and recipients chosen by this Committee can receive the award only once.
NOMINATION PROCEDURE
Instructors may be nominated by students, staff, or other faculty members, but may not self-nominate.
Nominators complete the nomination form, write a letter (250-500 words), and send both electronically to the Faculty of Arts Office by April 1, 2024.
Once notified that they have been nominated, nominees should submit a teaching CV (of no more than five pages) and a one-page statement of their teaching philosophy by May 1, 2024. Nominees are encouraged to describe the ‘what,’ ‘how,’ and ‘why’ of their teaching in this statement.
Nominees should also provide other supporting information, which may include:
- Student assessments that provide information about the quality of teaching over the range of undergraduate courses taught.
- Letters from alumni that provide information on the lasting effect of the nominee’s teaching.
- Letters from UW or external colleagues regarding teaching, course materials, range of courses and activities related to teaching.
- Videos and screen shots.

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD
Nominations and documents should address criteria such as these:
- Successfully implements new or innovative techniques and pedagogies
- Exhibits a consistently superior command of the subject matter
- Requires students to demonstrate a comprehensive, coherent understanding of the subject matter
- Presents the subject matter at an appropriate level that is challenging yet accessible
- Consistently demonstrates a concern for student progress and is available and approachable for out-of-class consultation
- Exhibits excellent communication skills
- Demonstrates excellent planning and organization
- Demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching the course content
- Inspires enthusiasm for the subject in students
- Strongly encourages students to be critical, to think independently, and to solve problems
- Acts as a valuable resource on teaching matters for colleagues
