How does our online application work?

Step 1: complete the General Application. It will ask you questions about your financial need, academic goals, and extra-curricular activities. We automatically include your student record information, such as your major and GPA, in your application. You can view this information by clicking on 'Applicant Record' located on the bottom left of your screen.

Step 2: complete the secondary application that appears in your portal. It may be called "University Scholarships and Department Awards" or "Entrance Award Opportunities". Some departments also have their own major-specific application.

Step 3: The online application will also generate a list of "Recommended Opportunities" that you may qualify for. Review each opportunity to see if it's applicable to you.

Step 4: Wait to hear if you have received an award. The Awards and Financial Aid office will contact you via your UWinnipeg webmail if the committee selects you for an award!

Applying for Awards and AI Text-generating Tools

Just like writing an essay or taking a test, students must follow the principles of academic integrity when applying for awards (e.g., honesty, respect, fairness, and responsibility). Personal statements and declarations, reference letters, resumes/CV’s, or any other personal information submitted for an award, is expected to be in the student’s own voice and honestly reflect their experience, achievements and personal story.

AI text-generating tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Bing, Notion AI) should not be used to create or falsely embellish any information submitted for an award.

Using AI text-generating tools for functional purposes (e.g. editing original prose, improving grammar/punctuation, translating words) is permitted, as long as its use is acknowledged by the student.

An informal statement should be included at the end of each submitted document to acknowledge the use of AI text-generating tools, if applicable (e.g., at the end of the personal statement: “ChatGPT used for grammar/punctuation” ).

It is not recommended to include private or confidential information when using a Generative AI tool as it may become part of the Large Language Model being used and, therefore, potentially available to others.   

If students are unsure whether their use of AI tools is acceptable for an award application, they should consult with the Awards and Financial Aid office for advice. We will be happy to help.
