Award Recipients

Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Prize 
This prize will be given to a student with high academic achievement, who is studying the religion, history, politics, theology, or human rights of South Asia, as an undergraduate or within the Global College at The University of Winnipeg. Preference will be given to students who have shown a particular interest in Punjabi culture and/or Sikh religion. This award is established by the Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Foundation Inc., in recognition of the achievements of Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha, whose works include Mahan Kosh (Encyclopedia of the Sikh Literature), the standard guide books for understanding Sikhism.

Bill Gadsby Pre-Service Teaching Award 
This prize was established upon the retirement of Bill Gadsby who served the Bachelor of Education program as both Director of Student Teaching and Director of The Winnipeg Education Centre program. It will be awarded annually to the graduating B.Ed. degree student at The University of Winnipeg who demonstrates outstanding teaching skills and exceptional potential for a stellar teaching career.

Certified General Accountants Association of Manitoba Graduation Prize in Business & Administration 
This prize will be awarded annually to a graduating Business & Administration Major with a concentration in Accounting and the highest standing in the major subjects. Should this student already have received the award in a previous year, it will be awarded to the student with the second highest standing in the major subjects. The recipient also will receive a $500 credit towards tuition in the CGA program.

Dr. Dan A. Chekki Prize for Excellence in Sociology 
This prize was established through a contribution to The University of Winnipeg Family Campaign by Dr. Dan A. Chekki, Professor Emeritus of Sociology. It will be awarded annually, on the recommendation of the Sociology Department, to a student who has demonstrated excellence in Sociology, has written the best Honours research paper or thesis in completion of the requirements of the B.A.(Hons.) degree, and who intends to pursue a graduate program in Sociology.

Gawthrop Prize 
Awarded in the Spring convocation to the graduate who has achieved the highest overall grade point average in Theology.

This is awarded to the student who has the highest overall average in graduate studies.

Governor General's Silver Medal 
This is awarded to the student who has the highest overall average in undergraduate studies.

Graduate Student of Highest Distinction Award 
This award is given to students who achieve a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.26 for all the course work of their graduate degree; AND meet at least one of the following criteria: They complete with distinction in-depth and comprehensive project(s) within their academic area of interest (e.g. thesis, research paper, documentary film, exhibition), or they complete work with distinction under the supervision of their graduate advisor and/or graduate committee, or they surmount major obstacles in pursuit of their educational goals. This award will be given by the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Faculty Dean at the Spring convocation. The award may be given to a maximum of one student per graduate program.

Lost Prizes Award 
This award was established by the Faculty of Education to support students enrolled in the Faculty of Education. It will be awarded to an outstanding student in Fourth or Fifth Year, in recognition of exemplary service to the community through mentorship and outreach. The student must also have high academic achievement and financial need.

Awarded in the Spring convocation to the graduate who has achieved the second highest overall grade point average in Theology.

O.T. Anderson Award 
This award was established by the Class of '62 in memory of Professor O.T. Anderson, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, United College, from 1926 to 1958. The award of a miniature of the O.T. Anderson Trophy is made to the outstanding graduate of the year for distinguished academic and extra-curricular achievement during undergraduate year. This Award is given out during Spring Convocation.

Prize of the Ambassador of Switzerland - French Studies
Awarded to the runner-up for the Major Gold Medal in French Studies. This prize is a book given to the student at convocation.

Ron Norton Prize in Psychology - Undergraduate
This prize is awarded in honour of Dr. G. Ronald Norton who taught at The University of Winnipeg from 1968 to 1999, serving as Department Chair from 1986 to 1991. It will be awarded annually to the student who has written the best thesis in completion of the requirements of the Psychology (Honours) program.

Awarded in the Spring convocation to the graduate who has achieved the third highest overall grade point average in Theology.

The Mayor's Medal
Is awarded annually at the Spring Convocation, on the recommendation of the Student Awards Committee, to a graduating student whose record combines academic distinction and service to the community of Winnipeg; students whose service to the community derives from their study of urban issues may be given special consideration.

The Stars of Spence Street Award 
This prize will be given to a student at Spring Convocation who works to make a difference on The University of Winnipeg campus through their passion and commitment to supporting students in achieving their educational goals. This award is connected to the annual announcement of The Star of Spence Street Prize for staff. Both awards embody the principles of student engagement and active participation with students on campus.
