GMB Chomichuk's Pop-Up Comics Workshop
On March 2nd and March 3rd, UWinnipeg's 2020 Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence, GMB Chomichuk, ran "Pictures Are Words," a pop-up comics creation workshop outside of Gallery 1C03. With art supplied by Chomichuk, and scissors, markers, pens, and glue supplied by the gallery, students were invited to sit down and to disassemble and reassemble the materials into their own comics.
The goal of the workshop, says Chomichuk, was to "build representations of secrets and difficult ideas that are the real work of being a writer: finding something worthwhile to write about." By making the process entertaining and public, Chomichuk hoped to "dispel the notion that all writing is precious and all good ideas require some secret place and time with the muse.”
Jennifer Gibson, curator of Gallery 1C03, says, "It was a joy to witness the foyer of Gallery 1C03 come alive with creative activity earlier this week as students responded to University of Winnipeg Writer-in-Residence GMB Chomichuk’s invitation to collaborate with him to 'make art for no reason,' taking a few moments out of their day to de-stress through the production of unique comics-style collages."
