The Publishing Speakers Series Continues

The 2022-23 Publishing Speakers Series continues in March with three further events.
March 3: Cody Caetano
First up, on Friday, March 3rd at 12:30pm CT is Canada Reads longlisted author and CookeMcDermid literary agent Cody Caetano. The event will be moderated by Jenny Heijun Wills and is sponsored by the Critical Race Network. Caetano will be answering questions about his work and his role as a literary agent.
Caetano has an MA in English in the field of Creative Writing and a BA in Professional Writing and Communication from the University of Toronto. As an agent, he represents and seeks to work with writers of original literary fiction and non-fiction, poets transitioning into prose, and storytellers who take risks for the betterment of their readerships. He uses his dynamic skillsets, experiences, and background to nurture a personable and author-centric connection to the journey and processes of publishing and to help writers meet their goals and needs.
Caetano is Anishinaabe, Portuguese, and an off-reserve member of Pinaymootang First Nation. His mother’s family comes from the Manitoba Interlake and his father’s family emigrated from the Azores in the 1960s. Cody’s memoir, Half-Bads in White Regalia, sold in a seven-bid auction, received an Indigenous Voices Award, and debuted as a national bestseller via Penguin Canada’s Hamish Hamilton imprint.

March 10: Drew Hayes
On March 10th at 2:30pm CT, join Christina Fawcett in conversation with Drew Hayes, a self-published, blog-first author, and the author of The Villains’ Code series, the Super-Powered series, the Spells, Swords and Stealth series, and the Fred, the Vampire Accountant series. Hayes is the founder of Thunder Pear Publishing and releases his ebooks and print texts via Amazon.
During his visit, Hayes will be discussing Forging Hephaestus, the first book is The Villains’ Code series.
This event is open to the public and will be an hour and a half in length.

March 30: Tanya Boteju
The final event in the 2022-23 Publishing Speakers’ Series will feature Tanya Boteju reading from her work and joining us for a Q&A moderated by Lindsay Wong on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at 7pm CT. This Zoom event is sponsored by the Writers’ Union of Canada.
Boteju is an English teacher and writer living on unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations (Vancouver, Canada). Her 2019 novel, Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens was named an American Booksellers Association Indie Top 10 Pick of the Summer and a Rainbow List selection for 2020. Her short story “Floating” appears in the anthology Out Now (2020), and her newest YA novel, Bruised (2021), was selected as a Gold Standard book by the Junior Library Guild. In both teaching and writing, Boteju is committed to positive, diverse representation.

The Publishing Speakers’ Series will return in 2023-24!
The 2022-23 Publishing Speakers’ Series was a production of the English Department’s Special Programs Committee with funding support from the Chair of the English Department and the Critical Race Network. The Series is set to return in 2023-24 with another slate of guest speakers from the world of publishing - authors, agents, editors, publicists, marketing associates, and independent publishers – who can provide insight into both the practicalities and the possibilities of publication.
