Biography:

I am currently Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Winnipeg, with an underlying appointment as Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences.

Most of my recent writing is about how capital, class, and culture relate to environmental issues. For example, my new book is about how the music industry is being influenced by climate crisis. It will be published by Verso in fall 2025.

Previously, I wrote about the environmental impact of the record industry. Decomposed: The Political Ecology of Music (2019) was widely covered in the media and received several awards, including the IASPM International Book Prize. A related book, Audible Infrastructures: Music, Sound, Media (2021), received the Ellen Koskoff Prize from the Society for Ethnomusicology.

I’ve started work on a new project. It’s a coauthored book about sunscreen—a kind of social, cultural, environmental, medical, and industrial history.
