2SLGBTQ+ Community

The University of Winnipeg is committed to being an inclusive and welcoming space for all 2SLGBTQ+ students, staff, faculty, and community members. We are committed to gender inclusivity, countering homophobia and transphobia, decolonizing gender and sexuality, and building community by, with, and for UWinnipeg members with diverse gender identities, gender expressions, and sexualities.

Access information here about opportunities to connect, resources, services, and learning opportunities for 2SLGBTQ+ faculty, staff, and students, and their allies.

We are proud of our support of Pride Winnipeg and always look forward to taking part in Pride celebrations in June. For more information, see Pride UWinnipeg.

Danielle Marie Bitz, Subject Librarian for Women & Gender Studies

C2C: Two Spirit & Queer People of Colour Call to Conversation with LGBT & Allies

"C2C: Two Spirit & Queer People of Colour Call to Conversation with LGBT & Allies" met from October 20-22, 2017 at The University of Winnipeg. C2C was hosted by The University of Winnipeg (UW) in partnership with Two-Spirit People of Manitoba (http://www.twospiritmanitoba.ca/) and QTPOC Winnipeg (http://qpoc-international.com/about-2/). The C2C conference was a remarkable event with nearly 150 leading local, national and international delegates (2S, QTPOC, LGBTQ*, and cisgender heterosexual allies) — students, faculty, community members, artists, activists, and Elders/traditional knowledge holders — gathered to discuss where our communities intersect. Out of these discussions and
our coalitionary community-building efforts, Calls to Action were also developed.

Museum Queeries

Museum Queeries is an interdisciplinary research project based at The University of Winnipeg, co-led by Dr. Heather Milne and Dr. Angela Failler, with collaborators from across Turtle Island. As institutional spaces, museums are often closely linked to national identities and histories and also, tacitly, to heteronormative and cisnormative representations of the polity and public culture. Museum Queeries prioritizes Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, and queer (2S+LGBTTQ), contributions and interventions into museums and museum studies both as a means of addressing structural exclusions and opening new modes of productive inquiry and activism.

Queer Studies Research Guide

This research guide supplements the existing Women's and Gender Studies library subject guide, and emphasizes alternative terminologies when searching for topics related to LGBTQ+ people and issues.

Two-Spirit Archives

The mission of the Two-Spirit Archives is to develop an internationally-renowned centre for research that supports the needs of the Two-Spirit community; makes Two-Spirit people visible in our documentary heritage; and supports the research, teaching, learning, and community mandates of the University. It is guided in its development by the Two-Spirit Archives Advisory Council, which ensures Two-Spirit people are central to preserving the history of their contributions to society and in strengthening their community.

Two-Spirit Oral Histories

The stories of Two-Spirit people have been mostly absent from history owing to white settler colonization and discrimination within communities, including within Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities. The creation of oral histories provides an opportunity for Two-Spirit people to share their lived experiences and allows for Two-Spirit stories to be recorded for future generations. The Two-Spirit Archives has initiated an oral history program that has completed two phases of interviews thus far with plans to facilitate additional phases in the future. These stories will help to provide source material for new histories, research, and creative works about Two-Spirit people, and they may also assist young people who are struggling to come to terms with being Two-Spirited through these examples.

Trans and Gender Diverse Students' Guide

This resource guide was developed specifically for trans and gender diverse students at The University of Winnipeg. It provides information and resources for navigating aspects of UWinnipeg’s systems and campuses, as well as links to services and supports outside of UWinnipeg that are relevant for trans and gender diverse students. This guide may also serve as a resource for those supporting trans and gender diverse students.

This guide will continue to be updated to reflect accurate information on our programs, facilities, systems, and services and how they help to meet the needs and priorities of trans and gender diverse students.
