2019-2020 Award Recipient

I actually applied for the Criminal Justice grad program a little late in the year and this was the only remaining scholarship for which the deadline hasn’t passed. The application was quite intensive, I had to work on it while on vacation but I’m so glad I tried out anyway. I definitely didn’t expect to win but when I did, it felt like an affirmation that I was making the right choice with my research area and by pursuing a masters in general. The scholarship allowed me to concentrate on my studies instead of worrying about finances and student loans. It also provided me with the confidence and experience to apply to other scholarships in the future.

I thank every professor who wrote me a last-minute recommendation letter, I cashed in all my favours in order to get this application done in time. I would also love to thank Dr. Gorkoff, who wasn’t even my thesis supervisor at the time but was one of the first professors to encourage me to apply for the grad program in the first place.

If I had to give any advice to current graduate students, it would be to shoot your shot, even if it’s a long shot, even if you don’t think you’re going to get it. It is sad how few people try out for scholarships/awards and you can surprise yourself with what you can achieve!

2021-22 Award Recipients

Emma TraynorEmma Traynor – Bioscience, Technology and Public Policy

I am currently a second-year M.Sc. student in the Bioscience, Technology, and Public Policy program. My project examines how climate change is altering aquatic ecosystems, specifically how carbon dioxide influences behaviour and physiology of juvenile salmonids. While out in the field collecting data for my project, I was notified that I was a recipient of the Research Manitoba Master’s Studentships. At the time I felt very relieved that I now had some financial help going forward with the project. With this knowledge, it was one less thing on my mind and I was really able to throw myself fully into data collection. Going forward this funding will allow me to focuses on analyzing my data and writing up my thesis. I would like to acknowledge and thank my supervisor, Dr. Caleb Hasler, for pushing me to apply and for helping me with the application process. This upcoming year I am most excited to finally meet and collaborate with other grad students within the program.
