The Senator Thomas Crerar Scholarship
This scholarship worth $13,000 is awarded to a student who is completing their final undergraduate or M.A. qualifying year and is planning to enter a graduate program in Humanities with preference given to students showing an interest in Canadian History or Philosophy or the language and literatures of either French or English-speaking peoples. This scholarship, named in honour of the late Senator Thomas Crerar, P.C., C.C., L.L.D., is established by a fund created by a bequest of Dorothy Naylor and administered by the Winnipeg Foundation.
Laura Garinger – History Alumna
I will be graduating in the fall of 2021 from the JMP in the Archival Studies stream. My research focused on botanical specimens in herbaria as a type of archival record, applying archival theory to these records to provide greater context to their creation. I received the Senator Thomas Crerar award in 2018-2019.
This award was brought to my attention by the Graduate Programs Assistant for History at the University of Manitoba, Sylvie Winslow. During my time in the program, Sylvie always took the time to send me award descriptions she knew I was eligible for. I’d also like to thank my past professors for providing references for awards applications. I am very grateful to have been selected, and would like to thank the Winnipeg Foundation and its donors for their continued support of post-secondary students. This scholarship helped to alleviate the financial burden of continuing my education, helping cover the costs of tuition and costs of living so that I could better focus on my studies.
It goes without saying that it can be difficult to find time to decompress from the graduate studies workload - especially during this pandemic. One piece of advice I have to give to graduate students is to include breaks from research, coursework, and writing in their schedule to take time for themselves.
2021-22 Award Recipient
Salam Al Sayed – Cultural Studies
Getting this award has allowed me the opportunity to make a switch from my full-time work as a social worker to starting grad studies in a different field and building a whole new set of skills. My community engagement in addition to my interest in various fields in the humanities have qualified me for this award. I would like to thank the Sentator Thomas Crerar Scholarship Committee and the Cultural Studies Grad Program Committee for providing me with this once in a lifetime opportunity. I am looking forward to growing academically and exploring new horizons in the rich and vast field of Cultural Studies.
