CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents perform a variety of very basic support services in one or more areas.  The work involves the support of teaching, research, and administrative areas of The University's operations.

Close supervision is provided by a more senior academic, administrative or support staff member.  Incumbents may be required to assume responsibilities of another position at the same level during normal absences.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. May provide support to an office area by: processing mail, filing, handling reception of phones/switchboard and routine in-person inquiries, basic typing/proofreading and/or data/word processing, ordering routine supplies, routine computations and record keeping, checking/verifying basic forms, and photocopying
  2. May provide support to a service area by: loading/unloading items, setting up/taking down furnishings/displays, moving/relocating items, assisting in laying cables, and may prepare items for moving/shipping
  3. May provide support to a library area by: routine check-in/check-out of library materials, collecting/sorting/transporting/shelving and shelf reading of printed materials, photocopying/dusting/vacuuming book stacks, replenishing paper/cleaning keyboards/screens, packing/unpacking materials, assisting in inserting/removing tattletapes/spine labels/basic repair procedures on damaged printed library materials; and assistance in the delivery of media equipment
  4. May provide support to a printing area by: setting up and operating bindery equipment used for finishing and assembling printed materials, performing routine maintenance (e.g. oiling equipment), preparing materials for delivery, maintaining records of work in progress, and maintaining an inventory of standardized forms
  5. May provide support to a recreation area by: issuing lockers/passes/keys/towels/sports equipment, explaining policies and procedures, opening/inspecting/securing facilities, maintaining records, handling cash, doing laundry, and setting up equipment
  6. May provide support to a laboratory area by: collecting/cleaning/sterilizing/distributing/setting up glassware/utensils/equipment, preparing and dispensing routine solutions and media following a prescribed formula or procedure, and general dusting/cleaning, watering/misting of plants following detailed instructions
  7. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)  performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Must be a full-time student at a High School or The University of Winnipeg
Experience
  • no experience is required, as "on-the-job" training is provided
Skills and Abilities
  • Accurate keyboard skills (35-45 wpm) and some familiarity with basic functions of software applications, in some positions
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, procedures and regulations
  • May require the ability to maintain records and handle cash
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients who may be staff, students, and/or the public
  • Ability to work day, evening and/or weekend shifts
Physical Requirements
  • May require some heavy lifting
  • Manual dexterity may be required
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
