CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents are responsible for the provision of basic technical assistance in support of teaching and research.  General supervision is provided by more senior technicians, administrators or academics.  Assigning and reviewing tasks and training other employees at the same or lower levels may be a requirement.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Collects and processes routine specimens and/or samples in a laboratory setting
  2. Assists in excavating at field sites, recovering and/or drawing profiles and maps of findings, labelling, cataloguing, cleaning and storing materials
  3. Monitors test subjects, records results, and summarizes findings in report format
  4. Prepares standardized samples, solutions, media or reagents for use in a laboratory following prescribed formulas and/or techniques
  5. Assists in or performs tests, experiments or routines involving basic, standardized techniques or procedures
  6. Feeds, waters and provides general care to animals, fish, insects and plants following specific instructions
  7. Using routine techniques, compiles and summarizes data and records and reports results obtained from interviews or tests, administering questionnaires or surveys, observing and recording activities and/or reviewing material in print
  8. Performs basic data input, verification and analysis using a computer terminal and prescribed programs and methods
  9. Compiles basic bibliographic information which may involve using library services
  10. Performs file maintenance activities and prints information as required
  11. Sets up and cleans laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, etc., sets up and operates standard equipment, performs general maintenance, makes minor repairs and assembles basic apparatus
  12. Identifies when chemicals, equipment, artifacts and general supplies are depleted from an inventory
  13. Operates audio, video and communications equipment in the creation of classroom telecourse productions
  14. Uses duplicating equipment to reproduce copies of original telecourse productions
  15. Prepares packaged telecourse productions for distribution
  16. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications required are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Completion of two years of an undergraduate degree in a related discipline from a recognized institution or in a Diploma program
Experience
  • Some directly related experience 
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions 
  • Ability to assign work and provide introductory training to other employees at the same or lower levels where this is a requirement of the position
  • For some positions, television production skills or video training are preferred
  • Familiarity with software packages in use in an area is required in some positions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public
