CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents work under the supervision of a more senior technician, administrator or academic staff member providing standardized technical assistance, clerical and administrative duties.  General supervision, received initially, progresses to direction as skill and experience are gained.  Supervision of other employees is not a requirement at this level, however, incumbents may supervise students and assist in the introductory training of other employees at the same or lower levels.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Answers inquiries and/or provides assistance of a general technical nature to faculty, staff, students, and the public, referring more complex matters to a senior staff member
  2. Monitors and maintains equipment and supplies and performs minor repairs (eg: cage washers)
  3. Monitors an inventory of supplies and materials, and assists with annual inventory
  4. Maintains records on supplies, equipment, facilities, specimens, etc.
  5. Monitors the environment in specific facilities - ie:  humidity, temperature, light, security, etc., adjusting as necessary and/or reporting malfunctions
  6. Sets up, operates and/or provides instruction in the use of standard equipment and techniques for research or laboratories
  7. Maintains laboratories in an organized fashion and ensures compliance with safety procedures
  8. Stores and maintains collections of animals for use in classrooms and laboratories and may order as required
  9. Feeds, waters and cares for animals in accordance with instructions
  10. Maintains and cleans equipment and facilities associated with housing, cleaning and research including: cages, walls, floors, hallways, and removing animal waste and carcasses
  11. Monitors the health status of animal colonies and reports irregularities to appropriate authority
  12. Provides assistance in experiments involving weighing, sexing and breeding of animals following directions from researchers or more senior technicians
  13. Assists in the introductory training of other employees at the same or lower levels
  14. Allocates work assignments to student employees hired on projects and coordinates its completion on time and satisfactorily
  15. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications required are:

Level of Formal Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline plus no experience or Diploma plus one year of directly related experience
  • Experience in using research methodology (qualitative and quantitative) required in some positions
Certification
  • Level 1 Certificate in Animal Care may be required in some positions
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions on technical matters
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public
  • Ability to maintain detailed records
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
  • Ability to use personal computers in a Windows environment may be required
