CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
In positions at this level, incumbents apply an advanced level of skills
and training for the scope of their tasks and may lead small teams and
projects. Incumbents perform skilled technical support services within the
institution.
Direction is provided, but individuals possess the background knowledge
and experience to make informed and responsible decisions which are
technically sound and take into account the needs of the University.
Incumbents provide guidance and instruction to other staff at the same and
lower levels and may be required to assume their responsibilities during
normal absences.

ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION
WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
- Is expected to be
familiar with all applicable methods, practices and guidelines within
the functional area and operates within those standards
- Must function
effectively, productively and meet time and quality targets across all
tasks with infrequent reference to others
- Performs moderately
complex tasks including: estimating, planning, scheduling
- Provides skilled
technical, programming and system support on: equipment, databases and systems,
existing software products and/or custom software applications
- Analyzes conceptual
requirements, prototypes new systems or system modifications, tests and
converts conceptual requirements into logical and/or physical designs
- Develops computer programs
and writes software and documentation for users and Departmental needs
- Provides training and
assistance to users on computer applications – i.e.: word
processing, data base management systems, etc., to allow them to make
use of their own applications
- Performs
troubleshooting on programs and systems problems and attempts to resolve
them
- Supports campus
networks and related systems environment by: installing and upgrading as
well as providing: maintenance, troubleshooting, directory and account
management, configuring and administering network devices, documentation
and end user support in network administration and maintenance of
networks
- Participates with
colleagues on complex tasks
- May act as project
leader on moderately complex projects
- Plans all work
assignments, manages commitments and reports to supervisor on assignment
status
- Attends on-going or
advanced courses in commercial and business practices
- Attends seminars,
conferences and affiliation with professional groups to extend technical
or specialist knowledge in area of specialization
- Studies techniques and
concepts that broadens skill base and enhances ability to understand
workable solutions for clients
- Performs other related
duties as required or assigned

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)
performance are:
Level of Formal Education and Experience
- Professional degree in
a related discipline from a recognized institution, plus 1 year of
directly related experience, or
- Undergraduate degree
in a related discipline from a recognized institution plus 2 years of
directly related experience, or
- Accredited
Institutional Diploma from a recognized institution plus 3 years of directly
related experience, including: a good working knowledge and
understanding of microcomputer hardware and software systems,
techniques, local area networks and/or their operating systems
- or
- An acceptable
equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in
computer programming in languages required by the department in order to
diagnose problems with equipment and systems
- Well developed oral
and written communication skills with the ability to instruct and/or
explain detailed technical procedures and ideas to University faculty,
staff, students and prepare technical reports
- Ability to analyze and
assess user needs, evaluate effectiveness of solutions and resolve
problems
- Ability to exercise
sound independent judgement, initiative and resourcefulness
- Ability to plan,
organize, establish schedules and deadlines for work processes and other
employees while maintaining effective working relationships with
co-workers and other University staff in a team environment
Physical Requirements
- May be required to
lift and move apparatus in excess of 15 kg.
- Capable of performing
the duties as assigned
