Biography:
Izzeddin Hawamda was born and raised in a rural village just outside of the city of Nablus in the West Bank, Palestine. He currently works as the Anti-Racist Education Professional Learning Initiative Coordinator with Louis Riel, River East Transcona, and Winnipeg School Divisions. He previously worked as a high school teacher where he was passionate about developing opportunities for Indigenous students and newcomer students to share spaces and stories in an effort to build bridges and break down the barriers. Izzeddin, along with two colleagues, is a co-founder of Bridge, a dialogue group focused on addressing polarizing conversations through narratives, storytelling, and compassionate listening. He also facilitates events and workshops about the power of dialogue and the importance of sharing, listening, and respecting diverse perspectives and narratives and was chosen in 2023 to participate in the WhereWeStand storytelling collaboration project. Izzeddin is an advisor to the Conflict and Resilience Research Institute Canada, a member of the CBC Manitoba Community Advisory Board, and a member of the Educator Team throughout the development of the Extremism and Radicalization to Violence Prevention in Manitoba Toolkit. Izzeddin believes that sharing stories with others has the power to create opportunities for humanization and empathy building. He recently completed a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Manitoba.
