Christie McLeod
Christie McLeod Christie McLeod graduated from the University of Winnipeg in 2014 with a 3-year BA in Human Rights and Global Studies (now Human Rights) and a 4-year BA in International Development Studies.
McLeod is the Founder and a Board Member of the Human Rights Hub Winnipeg. This interactive website was developed in partnership with Global College to coordinate and promote the many events and activities taking place in Winnipeg’s human rights sector.
McLeod completed the joint JD/Masters in Environmental Studies program at Osgoode Hall Law School and York University, with the latter focusing on Canadian climate accountability. During her education, she also worked with Human Rights Watch in New York City and Toronto to research the impact of climate change on food security in Indigenous communities in Canada, and with West Coast Environmental Law as a summer student and legal researcher.
She is currently a member of national business law firm Miller Thomson’s Advocacy Group, where she regularly advises Indigenous communities and companies on environmental, Indigenous, administrative, and regulatory law matters, as well as ESG issues. She has appeared before the BC Court of Appeal, the BC Supreme Court, the BC Provincial Court, the Territorial Court of Yukon, and the Nunavut Court of Justice.
McLeod’s fondest memory of her time at Global College was a field course that brought her to South Africa in 2013. McLeod says, “this was such a unique opportunity – Canadian and South African students travelled around the country together learning about post-conflict truth, memory and reconciliation. I expected to learn about South Africa, but was surprised to learn nearly as much about myself. While I was passionate about international human rights, I realized that I knew little about the issues in my own country.”
