Three MDP Students recipients of prestigious major awards

The Master’s in Development Practice Program would like to congratulate Kaitlyn Duthie-Kannikkatt and Dev Kashyap for winning the 2014 Manitoba Graduate Scholarships (MGS) and Trudie Broderick for winning the 2014 University of Winnipeg Graduate Studies Scholarship (UWGSS). Both scholarships are valued at $15,000 and are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and a commitment to community service.

Kaitlyn’s research examines Indigenous resilience through a case study of community-based food sovereignty initiatives at the White Earth Land Recovery Project (WERLP), based on the White Earth Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota.

Dev’s research explores the vision and model of holistic and sustainable community-based microenterprise on urban land in the Piapot First Nation, Saskatchewan.

Trudie has demonstrated her commitment to Indigenous peoples and communities through her extracurricular and academic work here in Winnipeg: tutoring undergraduate Aboriginal students at the UWinnipeg and research with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and the Urban and Inner City Studies program; across Canada working with the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) on the trafficking of Aboriginal women for sexual exploitation; and globally on improving access to social justice initiatives in Australia.

Kaitlyn and Trudie will both be presenting at the International Conference on Sustainable Development Practice at Columbia University in September.
