Making of the 1st Wesmen Indigenous Day

MDP student Stephen Penner had and proposed the idea of honouring Indigenous culture within the athletics department at the University of Winnipeg.

He, along with Aboriginal Students Services Centre (ASSC) and Aboriginal Student Council, helped organize the inaugural Wesmen Indigenous Day. The event included a traditional blessing and smudge by an elder and Indigenous drumming and dancing.

Stephen stated, "It was wonderful to be a small part of what I hope is an enduring tradition...There was a very special feeling in the air; I believe that the crowd and the players felt the significance of the day."
