The 6th International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) was held September 26-27th at Columbia University, New York City. It is annual event organized by the Master’s in Development Practice Global Association (MDP), the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD), The Earth Institute and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
This year’s conference theme was Breaking Down Silos: Fostering Collaborative Action on the SDGs.People in attendance are involved in research, policy, practice, and business who want to identify and share practical, evidence-based solutions to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local and national levels.
Six UWinnipeg MDP students attended and presented at the ICSD: Amanda Appasamy, Cassandra Szabo, Erika Vas, Chelsie Parayko, Kara Passey and Silvina Antunes.
All the students, except for Cassandra who presented on "Environmental Justice and Participation for Communities in Southern India," were part of the Indigenous Approaches to Understanding and Practicing Sustainable Development panel. Amanda's presentation was entitled "Establishment of a Legally Binding International Legal Framework and Policy for Traditional Knowledge Protection in Relation to Biodiversity." Erika, Kara and Silvina presented their collaborative paper "The Honourable Harvest: An Indigenous Research Protocol for Sustainable Development." Chelsie Parayko presented on "Indigenous Community Energy Plan." The Panel was moderated by UW MDP Director Claire Reid and MDP Director Dave Wilsey (Minnesota).
