White Earth Land Recovery Project (WELRP), USA
Kaitlyn Duthie-Kannikkatt spent her summer with the White Earth Land Recovery Project (WERLP) in Minnesota, USA. WERLP’s mission is to facilitate the recovery of the original land base of the White Earth Indian Reservation while preserving and restoring traditional practices of sound land stewardship, language fluency, community development, and strengthening the spiritual and cultural heritage.
Kaitlyn's work focused on food sovereignty issues. She helped initiate the White Earth foodshed mapping network and began work on the Anishinaabe Food Systems Turtle resource. The resource is a re-envisioning of the USDA food pyramid for Anishnaabe and is more inclusive of wild foods. She often could be found helping out on the farm and in the Honor the Earth garden.
