UW - Food Sovereignty
Taylor Wilson had initially planned to work with Dr. Shailesh Shukla (UW Department of Indigenous Studies) in Fisher River Cree Nation developing a food sovereignty resource that maps out Fisher River’s foodscape, provides healthy eating information from Fisher River’s perspectives, and gives details about food resources within and throughout the community. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 those plans were put on hold. Dr. Shukla and Taylor quickly put their heads together and decided to pursue new learning objectives for Taylor that would also assist him with his own work.
Throughout her placement Taylor spent a large amount of time assisting and mentoring one of Dr. Shukla's graduate students with data analysis. She also read Indigenous Food Systems: Concepts, Cases, and Conversations (2020) and revised and updated Dr. Shukla’s Food Security course syllabus in terms of resources, readings and assignments. Taylor's final task was to write a book review for the academic journal, AlterNatives, which has been submitted for publication.
"The placement with Dr. Shukla was engaging and fulfilling. I was able to meet several of my learning objectives and provide him with assistance for his current and future students." Taylor
