Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom Centre
Sarah DeLaronde’s virtual placement was with the Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom Centre (IKWC), located on Treaty 6 Territory (Edmonton). Sarah’s role was to assist the research and communications teams with content creation. Secondly, she was tasked with reviewing and editing documents for the Treaty Kits; they were created for band operated schools and Treaties 6, 7, and 8. The kits are intended to help guide educators in providing Indigenous perspectives to the Treaties and not just western perspectives. Finally, she was also entrusted with completing a literature review that would later support the work of Kihciy Askiy. Kihciy Askiy is an urban site in Edmonton that would support land based education, ceremony and provide opportunities for intergenerational learning.
“As a young knowledge keeper, I have a lot of interest in organizations that focus on the preservation of traditional knowledge and decolonizing education. Therefore the values of the Indigenous Knowledge and Wisdom Centre align with my own so it was very easy for me to centre the work. Each staff meeting started with a prayer and an offering. All work is guided by the elders belonging to Treaties 6, 7, and 8. IKWC is the perfect fit for somebody who is committed to learning more about Indigenous education and Indigenous led projects.”
