Fisher River Cree Nation/ UWinnipeg
For Christy Bird's final field placement, she assisted and worked alongside Dr. Shailesh Shukla and community members of Fisher River Cree Nation to develop a traditional food guide that is complimentary to the cookbook Fisher River published. Christy travelled to the community to initiate meetings with stakeholders and to conduct interviews with youth, elders and knowledge keepers to gather stories. Her role was to ensure that the framework of a traditional food guide encompassed the stories of Fisher River members so that the traditional food guide may assist them in their continued community health and education efforts to promote wellness in all areas of community health and wellness.
"The wealth of knowledge that the youth of Fisher River shared is inspiring. It speaks volumes that knowledge transfer is occurring, and the youth are listening and practicing what they have learned from their grandparents, parents and community. I am grateful for being a part of this community-led research project and for the stories that community members shared with me."
