NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre

Jessica is a first-year MDP student working with NorWest Co-op Community Food Centre for her Canadian field placement. At NorWest, many programs are based on offering accessible, low-cost, healthy foods to individuals and families. Jessica’s role over the summer was primarily focused on assisting in program delivery and the development of a community farm project. The community farm offers workshops and activities related to traditional planting, preservation practices, and provides locally-sourced foods.  Jessica participated in the daily operation of NorWest, which allowed for engagement with community, Elders, and NorWest staff. Jessica’s placement also brought forth the opportunity to explore the food-based needs of Winnipeg and how localized organizations contribute to combatting food insecurity.
