Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)
During Janelle Poiron’s Field Placement, she worked remotely for Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) in their Social Determinants of Health Division and on their Equity Analysis and Policy Research team. Her team was located all across Canada through based in Ottawa. Her primary project involved their newly released Health Inequalities Data Tool, which contains many indicators to measure inequity in Canada. Janelle was involved in taking the Métis specific data and indicators and ranking Métis health inequities. This then showed which indicators show the greatest inequities. From there she created a paper to share these results and formulate how this relates to Métis health priorities and social determinants of health.
Other activities throughout her field placement include attending webinars and providing summaries to her team, attending the MMIWG2S+ conference at the University of Winnipeg, collecting and sorting through literature for off-reserve populations, last minute request on UNDRIP and some other duties such as facilitating meetings.
Janelle was offered a permanent position with PHAC on a different team starting in the fall which she has accepted!
‘’With such an interest in health, It’s always been my dream to work at PHAC. I was so incredibly fortunate to work there over the summer and happy I’m able to stay in PHAC!’’
