Indigenous Spiritual Biography
Shane Patterson worked with Dr. Mark Ruml, professor in the department of Religion & Culture, on a research project titled ‘Indigenous Spiritual Biography as the Matrix for Truth and Reconciliation." This project examines spiritual biographies and teachings of Indigenous healers as well as spiritual leaders as part of the matrix for reconciliation. The project also focuses on documenting the spiritual biographies of well-known Indigenous healers and spiritual leaders. The research methodology is using video interviews of 100 healers and spiritual leaders within Winnipeg and southern Manitoba. For those participants who are interviewed, questions will be asked connecting their own spiritual journeys and teachings as it relates to reconciliation. An Indigenous Advisory circle is part of the methodology to ensure the project’s research is being done in a culturally respectful approach.
"The experience with the Indigenous Spiritual Biography Project was rewarding and extremely insightful. Having the opportunity to interact and listen to knowledge keepers and traditional healers share their lived experiences was inspiring. This project provides valuable knowledge and education on traditional healing, Indigenous culture, ceremonies, and other enriching aspects to the modality of traditional healing practices. This project honours the legacy, wisdom, and knowledge of the late Don Daniels. I have been humbled to have been apart of the project and appreciate Dr. Ruml’s admiration and commitment to this project."
