Manitoba Inuit Association (MIA)
Alice Egbedeyi had the opportunity to work with the Manitoba Inuit Association (MIA) located downtown Winnipeg. MIA is an Indigenous non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the distinct needs and evolving requirements of the Inuit residing in Manitoba. They achieve this mission by providing Inuit-centric and culturally appropriate services.
During her time with MIA, Alice played an integral role in advancing the organization's ongoing housing project initiatives. Her contributions included conducting research to establish evidence-based support for grant applications aimed at addressing the housing needs of the community members served by the organization. Through this experience, Alice acquired essential community engagement skills and heightened awareness, which she intends to carry forward as she progresses in her studies. She considers herself exceptionally privileged to have been welcomed into the community and to have had the honor of working closely alongside its members.
“My most significant experience during this time was the opportunity to make genuine connections with the staff and community members, despite not being Inuk myself. I am deeply honored to be considered not just an ally but a part of the family.”
