The tour will focus on water quality issues threatening freshwater bodies such as Lake Winnipeg. We will do a simple demonstration of measuring phosphorus, which is one of the important water pollutants, in the laboratory. In this method, the water is made to react with a chemical reagent mixture. A blue color is produced if phosphorus is present in water. The higher the concentration of phosphorus in water, the darker the blue color. This is the commonly used test to monitor phosphorus in runoff water reaching the lake |

Social Justice: Interdisciplinary perspectives at the University of Winnipeg Scholars from Urban and Inner-City Studies, Human Rights, Classics, and Education will discuss how social justice factors into their work at the University of Winnipeg. They will touch on a diversity of topics including: the uses and misuses of classical imagery, going beyond human rights in the pursuit of social justice, using community-based research to pursue transformative change, and how schools resist and reinforce inequality. 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Climate Change: Are We Ready for More Climate Change? Climate change in the coming decades will require us (everywhere) to adapt to new conditions, including new risks. What do we need to do minimize risk and avoid costly consequences? What are the economic and physical aspects of climate change? 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. AI: Looking beyond “Write this for me” The presentation will cover prompt strategies beyond simply asking AI to “write this for me,” helping students brainstorm topics and explore their interests. It will also provide an introduction to convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which serve as the foundation for many deep learning and machine learning applications involving images, such as face recognition and object identification. Additionally, the session will highlight AI-related courses offered by the Department of Applied Computer Science, providing insights into academic opportunities for students interested in pursuing AI studies. 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. |
