Solar Panels

The University of Winnipeg is home to one of the largest solar panel installations in the city, with 540 panels spanning the rooftop of the Axworthy Health and RecPlex. Producing approximately 180,000 kWh annually, this installation provides about 20% of the RecPlex’s yearly electricity needs, equivalent to the average energy consumption of 16 Canadian homes. This solar array generates 178,000 watts of clean energy, helping the University in achieving its 2017 Sustainability Strategy goal of sourcing 5% of campus energy from renewable sources by 2025.

Quick Facts:

  • Each panel is 6 x 3 feet and weighs 50 pounds.
  • If every panel was lined up end to end, it would span more than a kilometre in length.
  • The 180,000 kWh of electricity produced is the average energy consumption of 16 Canadian homes.
