Social Sustainability

Social sustainability focuses on creating inclusive, equitable, and supportive environments where all individuals can thrive. At the University of Winnipeg, this means promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across campus life, policies, and practices. Key initiatives include removing barriers for marginalized groups through the Dimensions Pilot Program, updating the Employment Equity and Diversity Policy, supporting equitable hiring practices for equity-deserving scholars, and enhancing campus accessibility with updated plans, self-audits, and training. These efforts aim to build a community where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.

These initiatives are supported by various groups and individuals at UWinnipeg, all working together to uphold social sustainability. The Human Rights and Diversity Office (HRDO) plays a central role in leading EDI efforts and providing resources for education, training, and consultation. The Employment Equity Advisory Committee offers valuable input on policy development, while faculty and staff members, including dedicated Employment Equity Consultants, work to ensure fair hiring practices. Additionally, student organizations, community groups, and campus leadership collaborate to ensure that everyone’s voices are heard and that UWinnipeg remains a welcoming and accessible place for all.
