Awards Night of Excellence 2016

Awards Night of Excellence 2016

On Wednesday, January 13, 2016, The University of Winnipeg held its annual Awards Night of Excellence at the Delta Hotel. The Grand Ballroom was filled to capacity with over 500 people in attendance. The evening reception honoured UWinnipeg's outstanding scholarship recipients and its community of donors who make such awards possible.

“The event not only serves as an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the brilliant young minds we have at our University, but it’s also an opportunity for the students, as well as all of us within the UWinnipeg community to thank our generous donors that make our robust awards program possible,” said Brian Daly, President and CEO of The University of Winnipeg Foundation. “It’s truly wonderful to see this many recipients and donors in the same room taking the time to get to know each other.”

Approximately 200 students attended the event receiving over 250 awards. Among the scholarship winners were Katharina Klassen and Ying (Jason) Yang (pictured right), both of whom earned the Sir William Stephenson Scholarship for 2015. This prestigious scholarship is awarded annually to one or two students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, superior leadership qualities on and off campus, and have the potential to make a valuable contribution to Canada.

Klassen is in her fourth year at UWinnipeg, studying Anthropology and Interdisciplinary Linguistics. She is a dedicated community volunteer, serving diverse communities through initiatives such as Sisters in Belief and the Oak Table Community Ministry (OTCM) in Osborne Village. Sisters in Belief, of which Klassen is the founding member, provides girls aged 8 through 13 with a safe space in which to interact and create healthy friendships, offering opportunities to connect with positive female role models and to participate in skill-building workshops. OTCM is a resource centre which provides basic amenities to clients with low income or who are experiencing homeless.

Yang is pursuing both a four-year Bachelor of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Arts, Honours in Economics. In addition to his high academic achievements, Yang is heavily involved with multiple student associations and volunteer initiatives, including serving as President of the Golden Key International Honour Society, UWinnipeg Chapter. In 2014, Yang developed a peer-tutoring service for students taking business courses at UWinnipeg. He continues to coordinate fundraising, marketing, tutor recruitment and training, and other administrative aspects of the program. The offering is now being extended to the Department of Economics and Professional, Applied & Continuing Education (PACE).

“I am grateful to have received such strong support in my time here at The University of Winnipeg,” said Yang. “From my professors in Business Administration, my colleagues from the Golden Key Society and our JDC West Team, to those that have supported the student awards that I have received. Your kindness and encouragement means so much. Thank you!”

Professor Emeritus and Fellow of United College, Dr. Robert (Bob) Young spoke on behalf of the donors while accepting this year's longtime donor recognition certificate, which was awarded to The University of Winnipeg Retirees Association (UWRA).

Several years ago, the Association established the UWRA Scholarship and Bursary Funds to commemorate the contributions of all retirees. Both awards recognize continuing students of proven academic ability who have records of sustained community service. To date, 10 exceptional students have received a total of $7,900!

In total, UWinnipeg provides more than $11.5 million in financial assistance each year ($3.5 million in award funding, and $8 million in Manitoba Student Aid).
