Teaching Support Hiring Info
1. If you need to hire teaching assistants, invigilators, markers, demonstrators, or classroom technical support positions (Student Assistant 2), and they have a current appointment as an hourly paid employee in your department, then you can just assign them hours of work for this function. The rates of pay for these people are included in the PSAC Academic Capacity collective agreement, which can be found on the Human Resources webpage. The rates of pay for the Student Assistants 2 are included in the AESES Collective Agreement also on the Human Resources webpage.
If the people do not have a current appointment as a marker, lab demonstrator, or teaching assistant in your department, and you plan to assign more than 8 hours, these positions will have to be posted (as per the PSAC – Academic Capacity collective agreement). To request a posting, you will need to complete the posting request form.
Classroom technical support positions (Student Assistant 2) fall under the AESES collective agreement, and do not require posting if you are hiring a student for three months or less. Please note that these positions are for UW students only.
Once you have selected your candidate, you will need to have them fill out an employment form. You can contact Bryan Ward in Human Resources for the rates of pay for these individuals.
2. You can hire as many assistants you need; you may get a small number of individuals who are able to do all the work among them, or you may have to hire more people for a smaller number of hours each.
3. Once they have worked the hours, you will need to fill out Bi-weekly Time Sheets for Hourly Paid Employees:
Non-PSAC Academic Capacity Employees
AESES Positions (student assistants)
This payment should be made from your departmental TA budget so that you have a sense of what the amount is, and we can plan for that in budgets in the future so you'll be able to support that expense directly if you need such invigilation assistance again.
If you have any questions about hiring, please contact your Human Resources Consultant. For questions regarding rates of pay or MyHR, please contact Bryan Ward at br.ward@uwinnipeg.ca. For timesheet questions, please contact payroll@uwinnipeg.ca
Send copies of the time sheets and an interdepartmental charge/transfer form with the total amount and your budget number to be reimbursed to b.doran@uwinnipeg.ca so that the funds can be transferred back from the VPs' budgets to you.
