Sara Ahmed Reading Discussion
On October 3, 2019, the Centre for Research in Cultural Studies (CRiCS) hosted a "Sara Ahmed Reading Disucssion" as its first fall 2019 session in the Professional Development Series. Facilitated by CRiCS members Heather Milne, Jenny Heijun Wills, and Jane Barter, this session was an opportunity for faculty, students, and staff to keep the conversation going after Dr. Sara Ahmed’s compelling lecture in Winnipeg on October 2 titled “Closing the Door: Complaint as Diversity Work.”
The facilitators responded to posts from Ahmed’s blog feministkilljoys.com ("Smile!"; "Damage Limitation"; "Why Complain?"), led a discussion on the idea of diversity in institutions, and reflected on the process and environment for complaint at the University of Winnipeg.
In attendance were representatives from the University of Winnipeg’s Faculty Association (UWFA) and the Human Rights and Diversity Office, along with other staff, faculty, and students.
