Email: m.lukie@uwinnipeg.ca

Biography:

Dr. Lukie previously taught high school physics, science, and mathematics from 2002-2016 in public and semiprivate high schools in Manitoba and was the treasurer for the Jungian Society for Scholarly Studies (JSSS). As the Vice-President of the Manitoba Association of Physics Teachers (MAST), he promotes the professional development of Manitoba’s physics teachers and develops activities aimed at increasing scientific literacy and awareness about science in the local community. Dr. Lukie earned his PhD in Secondary Education from the University of Alberta in 2021 and used a phenomenographic research methodology to explore high school physics students’, high school physics teachers’, and university physics professors’ conceptions about what it means to understand physics. Dr. Lukie completed an MEd from the University of Manitoba in Studies in Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning and investigated high school physics students’ engagement when designing an electric guitar pickup in the context of Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction. He completed a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Manitoba, a BA in Classical Studies and Anthropology from the University of Manitoba, and a BEd from the University of Winnipeg.

Teaching Areas:

Dr. Lukie teaches secondary education curriculum and instruction courses in physics, science and mathematics, and a course in advanced curriculum inquiry.

Research Interests:

Dr. Lukie’s research interests include phenomenography, physics and science education, student understanding and engagement, analytical psychology, and metacognition. In conjunction with the Canadian Space Agency, he is currently designing physics activities to engage K–12 students in STEAM education, an approach to learning that uses science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. These activities include a wide-ranging series of diverse engagement materials focused on lunar exploration, particularly Canadian efforts in this realm.
