UWinnipeg Business Student Receives National Scholarship

On May 22, Nav Brar will fly to Calgary where they will receive a Future Fund Scholarship for outstanding leadership. Awarded annually by Canada’s Outstanding CEO of the Year, this program gives $10,000 scholarships to 10 students from across the country.
“I feel fortunate to be nominated by the Faculty for this award,” says Nav. “It's a rare opportunity and I am honoured to be chosen from among my incredible peers.”
Nav is the third UWinnipeg Business student to receive this prestigious award. Andrew Kussy (BBA, 2012) and Samarah McRorie (BBA, 2017) are previous recipients. Each has gone on to rewarding careers. Kussy is now the Director at The Executive Dream Factory and McRorie is the Generosity Advisor at The Winnipeg Foundation.
“My journey to business and accounting has been long and winding. I started at the University of Winnipeg with plans to major in Human Rights. However, a couple years into the program, I realized that I wanted to pursue a degree with a more direct career path. I have always enjoyed math and logic so I decided to pursue Accounting. I am still very connected to my Human Rights roots and will minor in the subject.”

Chris Sale, Co-operative Education Coordinator, is proud of Nav for earning this prestigious award. “Nav is an active participant in UWinnipeg’s Co-op program, showing leadership qualities and willingness to help others, and has secured a coveted accounting Co-op position with Fort Group CPA for the summer. This scholarship is a well-deserved recognition of Nav’s dedication and talent.”
The money will help to fund Nav’s tuition and other related expenses. This will go a long way to helping them focus on their studies without the worry of finances.
Nav credits volunteer work for helping to shape who they are today. “Volunteering in the community grounds me when life feels overwhelming. Winnipeg has been my home for most of my life and I love our community.” Nav is an active member of the Global College Student Advisory Council, volunteers with the Winnipeg Foundation and works part-time at the Women's Health Clinic, a local not-for-profit. “This work helps me act on my passion for human rights and intersectional feminism.”
Nav is finishing up their third year of studies and is excited to board the plane to Calgary to accept the scholarship. They are looking forward to connecting with fellow award recipients and learning about their academic journeys. Nav notes, “I hope to make lasting connections that I can rely upon throughout my academic career and beyond.”
