Hoora Rezaei Moghaddam discusses their Thesis Defense
Recently, the Faculty of Graduate Studies caught up with Hoora Rezaei Moghaddam to discuss their thesis defense in the MSc in Applied Computer Science and Society program.
What interested you in the Applied Computer Science and Society program?
Well, I have been interested in the field of computer science since I was back in high school; However, when I was deciding for college I have tried to go to mathematics as I like d the challenge behind the math and I applied and I got fully funded for studying mathematics. I studied there for 2 years and then I just could bare not pursuing my passion, which was computer science, so I quit mathematics and went for software engineering and finished the 4yr program in 3yrs. Later, I applied for MSc in Applied Computer Science and Society and I got in. I found the program an opportunity to raise and learn more into the field of Computer Science and beginning a new adventure in my life and career.
Your thesis explored scalability and concept drift issues in learning categorical facts with tolerance rough sets. What interested you in this area?
Honestly, I can't really say I was interested in this area of research. However, the professor saw that field more useful and I guess I trusted her to make that choice, since she was supposed to be my mentor and guidance throughout the MSc program. Also, I believe the MSc program is not a student's idea based compare to PhD programs. Especially in our field of science that lots of things might be really fascinating but not possible due to lack of infrastructure or some ideas might be too big for MSc and not even possible to be done in a short time like that.
If you or another researcher were to continue with your work on this, what would be the next steps?
The next step for me has already started. It started a few months before I finished my program. I started working at Sighting Innovation Inc. which I am currently working there. They had a huge impact on how I finished my MSc and the level of support and love in the company helped me keep moving toward finishing. I plan to work there and maybe, later on, move on with my career to achieve my dreams.
Congratulations on the new position with Sighting Innovation Inc. Besides the new job, what are your plans after completing your Master’s degree?
I would love to apply for permanent residency in Canada and contribute as much as I can to the country that helped me grow and gave me a fair platform to learn, to love, and to be loved. In the meantime, I am planning to learn and grow more, someday I want to get a Machine learning position at Twitter and see the world from there, as Twitter is my favorite tech company. So, for now, I can say I want to learn as much as I can and develop my skills as much as I can for that day which I don't think is too much far for my reach. However, I genuinely haven't thought far after that...
Thank you and good luck! We will keep an eye on Twitter!
