On the Bubble: Contributions of Ponds and Wetlands to Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is naturally emitted by lakes, ponds and wetlands. Much of this methane is released to the atmosphere via ebullition, a process where bubbles produced in the low oxygen sediments rise to the surface of the water and pop into the atmosphere. However, there are major gaps in our understanding of what controls rates of ebullition, particularly in small water bodies such as ponds and small wetlands. This talk will describe a collaborative project aimed at understanding rates of methane ebullition from urban ponds and wetlands across North America.
