If CO2 in freshwater is rising, is this a problem?
CO2 may be increasing in freshwater ecosystems for a variety of reasons. Climate change, invasive species management, and aquaculture can all expose freshwater biota to high CO2. We have completed a series of studies to determine whether exposure to high CO2 alters native fishes and mussels. Key findings have shown that CO2 alters some common fish behaviors, and mussels exposed to CO2 have been found to undergo physiological change. Current work at U of Winnipeg is attempting to understand the potential for transgenerational and parental effects to mediate biotic responses to elevated CO2.
