Lightning - Tracking, Trending, and Outages

In 2019, lightning caused over 360 outages to Manitoba Hydro's HVdc, transmission and distribution system.  Outages can be temporary which could be as little a few seconds, or destructive which means damaged equipment and could take days or weeks to repair.

Since 1998 Manitoba Hydro has been utilizing Environment and Climate Change Canada's lightning data for outage investigation and outage prevention strategies.  This presentation will provide a brief insight into what lightning is, how it is located, and how Manitoba Hydro uses this lightning data.
