The Struggle for Starlight over the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory
The University of Calgary operates one of Canada's best equipped astronomical observatories. 50 years ago it was far outside the light dome of Calgary and sat under very dark pristine skies in the foothills of the Rockies. A brief overview of the research, teaching, and outreach efforts RAO will be described, and the quality of this activity is adversely affected by the growing level of background light. A great deal of effort has gone into forming partnerships with stakeholders to educate and inform policy makers and the general public about using light effectively, so that everyone can enjoy a star filled nighttime sky - which serendipitously benefits the RAO.
